A lot of us tend to think my employees ask about compensation once a year, twice a year, in perfect alignment with my annual compensation cycle. The reality is employees think whether you're paying every week, every two weeks, twice a month, whatever, it is an omnipresent concern for your employees. It is a very visible way that they interact with your organization. They are thinking about career development all the time.
You want your managers to be able to really confidently communicate with them, because guess what? Employees don't write you like a fair warning letter like, "Hey, I'm gonna show up to my one-on-one this week and ask about compensation."
Oftentimes, that's a surprise to a manager. They get landed in a conversation that they need to be well prepared for. So it's about the training you offer them. It's also about the tooling that you offer them, and Bob, for example, if I'm going to do an annual compensation cycle, I can see the comp ratio for my employees and I can see where they fall in the range of their job band.
I can't just say, "Oh yeah, let me ask hr, let me get back to you maybe in six months when we do a comp cycle."
That's not a good employee experience. That's not your pay philosophy being brought to life. You wanna do better, and so it's about how do you make that possible for your managers?
